Commercial & Institutional Building Water (Re)Use
According to USEPA’s Save Water in Office Buildings:
• Water used in office buildings account for approximately 9 percent of the total water use in commercial and institutional facilities in the United States
• Over the past 10 years, the costs of water and wastewater services have risen at a rate well above the consumer price index.
• The three largest uses of water in office buildings are restrooms, heating & cooling, and landscaping.
What We Offer
w3Synergy supplies the experience and water treatment equipment to Green Building projects including those seeking:
• USGBC LEED certification
• Living Building Challenge certification
• Water reuse

USGBC LEED certification

-
The United States Green Building Council (USGBC) Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) certification recognizes credits for conserving makeup water used in cooling towers. This is achieved by increasing the cycles of concentration and/or by using recycled nonpotable water.
-
To increase the cycles of concentration (COC) of water within the cooling tower while reducing or eliminating the need for chemical conditioning, w3Synergy offers a range of treatment equipment alternatives.
-
Makeup water hardness can be removed using Softener media or Nanofiltration (NF).
-
Reverse Osmosis (RO) on the other hand is recommended for makeup water containing a high concentration of total dissolved salts and minerals (TDS).
-
Electrodialysis Reversal (EDR) and Capacitive Deionization (CDI) are other available options for removing TDS.
-
Sidestream Filtration & Disinfection continuously filters a portion of the cooling tower water to remove suspended solids (TSS), organics, and TDS; thereby, reducing the likelihood of fouling and biogrowth and helping control scaling and corrosion.
-
Nonpotable recycled or reuse water can be used as makeup for cooling towers. Sources of recycled and reuse water include:
-
Nonpotable recycled water supplied by off-site POTW (e.g. purple pipe).
-
Nonpotable reuse water was recovered onsite.
-
Concentrate from onsite RO system.
-
Rainwater harvested onsite.
-
Recovered water from sump blowdown using RO, EDR, or CDI.
Living Building Challenge – Water Petal
The Living Building Challenge (LBC) is green building certification program created by the International Living Future Institute. The LBC is organized into seven performance categories (petals): Place, Water, Energy, Health + Happiness, Materials, Equity and Beauty.
The intent of the water petal is to meet all water demands within the carrying capacity of the site using water management systems that treat, infiltrate or reuse all the water on site. All stormwater and water discharge (grey and black water) must be treated onsite, purified as needed (without the use of chemicals) and managed thru reuse, a closed loop system or infiltration
Water Reuse

Regional and local municipalities are viewing non-potable water reuse as a means of meeting the increasing demand for water and wastewater services within their jurisdiction. By example, San Francisco recently enacted an ordinance requiring onsite water reuse systems to be installed and operated in new, large developments beginning in 2022. For commercial buildings, the project must reuse blackwater and condensate. For residential buildings, the project must reuse graywater and condensate.
w3Synergy designs and fabricates turnkey systems that integrate the treatment technologies /processes consistent with the combination of pathogen log reduction target levels (LRV or LRT) required by the permitting agency. Where appropriate, w3Synergy utilizes components that have previously been validated and accepted for use by the state or local regulators.
